We decided that we wanted to boost our understanding of U.S. history by visiting all 50 states in the opposite order they joined this great Union. We started, naturally enough, with Hawaii. And since we had only five days and four nights we decided that we'd stop with Hawaii, too. Maui is nice. This was our room :-)

Accompanying us were our friends, Laura and Don (seen here dressed for the summit of Haleakala, the dormant volcano that essentially is Maui). This is a view from the visitor's center at the top looking down into the crater. Laura was a little worried about being cold at the top, Here she is modeling her two-pairs-of-pants look. Did you know that Brussel Sprouts come from the top of Haleakala? S'true, and Susan was able to capture the evidence. It's a long way up.

But we also just relaxed at home. We went to celebrate Susan's birthday and our 1st anniversary. It was a real treat! Did I mention how pretty it is there? And I could have been back home doing more stuff like this.

Funny thing, it was also Laura's birthday (we had a separate cake for Susan, but I dropped the ball in the candle and the photo department).

All in all, it was an absolutely great trip. But we had to get back to take care of our little family.
